بورکهارت و آثار او
تیتوس بورکهارت؛ پسر کارل بورکهارت مجمه ساز سوییسی از خانواده ای معروف اهل بال، در شهر فلورانس چشم به جهان گشود و در آغاز عمر با ذوق وافری که در هنر داشت کوشید حرفۀ پدر خود را دنبال کند لکن علاقۀ مفرط او به حکمت و عرفان به زودی او را به مطالعۀ هنر قرون وسطی و قدیم کشانید و بالاخره در سال 1935 پس از مسافرت به آفریقای شمالی و سکونت در شهرهای مغرب مخصوصاً فاس، او را شیفتۀ هنر و تمدن و بیش از آن معنویت اسلامی گردانید و مانند جد معروف خود که اولین توصیف اماکن مقدسۀ اسلام را به زبان های اروپایی نگاشت، به تحقیق دربارۀ جوانب مختلف معارف و هنر اسلامی پرداخت؛ ولی برعکس جد خود تعبیر او از اسلام از درون بود و او از چشمۀ معرفت اسلامی جرعه ها نوشید و روح تشنۀ خود را با اکسیر عرفان سیراب ساخت. او به مطالعۀ دقیق علوم اسلامی پرداخت و حتی مدتی در مدرسۀ قدیمی فاس طلبگی کرد لکن علاقۀ اصلی او به علم حضوری بود و تجلی آن در هنر که به هردو دست یافت.
تیتوس بورکهارت پس از مراجعت به اروپا در موطن اجدادی خود سوییس اقامت گزید. سالیان دراز انتشارات Urs Graf Verlag Olten را اداره میکرد. و کتب بینظیر «شهرهای عالم روح» Stadtes des Geistes که هریک در نوع خود شاهکاری از تحقیق دربارۀ هنر دینی است زیر نظر او انتشار یافت، و خود چندین کتاب از جمله Sienna: Stadt der Jungfrau و Chartres und die Geburt der Kathedral و Fas: stadt des Islam در همین مجموعه تالیف کرد. نوشته های تیتوس بورکهارت در هنر دینی فراوان است که از مهمترین آن Von Wesen Heiliger Kunst in den Weltreligionen, Zurich1955 است که به زبانهای انگلیسی و فرانسوی نیز نشر یافته است و از شاهکارهای تحقیقی در این زمینه است. به علاوه او همواره علاقۀ خاصی به علوم جهانشاسی که رابطۀ نزدیکی با هنر دینی دارد از خود نشان داده و کتابهایی در این زمینه مانند Alchemie: Sinn und Weltbild, Olten1966 که به فرانسوی، انگلیسی و ایتالیایی نیز ترجمه شده (Cle Spretuelle De l`astrologie musulmane (Paris 1950 و Scienza Moderna e Saggezza Tradizioale (Torino 1968 نوشته است که آنها را در بصیرت و عمق نظیری نیست. شهرت تیتوس بورکهارت علاوه برآنچه در هنر دینی نگاشته است؛ بیشتر مربوط به ترجمه ها و تحقیقات ژرف او در تصوف است. کتاب او در اصول تصوف (Von Sufitom (Munchen1953 که به فرانسوی و انگلیسی نیز شهرت فراوان داشته و چندین بار تحت عنوان Introduction aux doctorine esoteriques de l`Islam و Intoduction to Sufi doctorine به چاپ رسیده است، بهترین مدخل در زبان های اروپایی بر جنبۀ تصوف نظری است. ترجمه های او از الانسان الکامل عبدالکریم جیلی و فصوص الحکمت محی الدین ابن عربی برای بار اول این آثار اساسی عرفان نظری را به صورت روشن و حواشی پرارج در اختیار مردم غرب قرار دارد و خدمتی شایان و جاویدان به شناساندن تصوف در دنیای معاصر کرد. آخرین کتاب بورکهارت دربارۀ تمدن و هنر اسلامی اسپانیا به زبانهای انگلیسی و آلمانی انتشار یافته است.
